The Innovation Impact Challenge encourages public authorities to make better use of satellite data and supports companies in developing innovative satellite applications. How? By bringing demand and supply together.

It starts with a concrete question from a public organisation. How can this organisation promote biodiversity? Monitor water quality? Detect illegal soil movement? Any question is possible, as long as satellite data play an important role in the solution.

The supply then comes from companies, institutions or consortia in the Netherlands. Once they understand the challenges faced by public organisations, they can develop targeted satellite applications with financial support that contribute to a solution.

The Innovation Impact Challenge (formerly: SBIR) therefore leads to a win-win situation. This challenge addresses the challenges faced by public authorities and stimulates the development of innovative and commercially interesting satellite applications.

Each challenge consists of two phases. In phase 1, selected participants carry out a feasibility study. The most promising ideas move on to phase 2: developing a working prototype of the satellite application.

Want to take part? Here’s how it works:

  1. You see a challenge that matches your knowledge and expertise.
  2. You register as a company or consortium.
  3. You prepare a proposal for the challenge you would like to take part in.

An evaluation committee ranks all submitted proposals. The highest-rated projects above the quality threshold and within the available budget are awarded a contract.
